It was fun as you learn at The Goodwill Shop’s polymer clay workshop with jewellery designer Anita Kohli at Oxford Bookstore.
The three-hour polymer clay workshop, co-hosted by The Goodwill Shop at Oxford Bookstore in Connaught Place, New Delhi was a fun learning experience. Jewellery designer Anita Kohli, who works magic with her fingers, crafting intricate pieces of earrings, rings, brooches, bracelets, anklets and even unique figurines, taught the skills to a group of eager participants.
Fashion designer Jattinn Kochhar’s little daughter Niyamat prompted him to make it a family event, with the family, including his wife Gunjan and 12-year-old son Sukh also joining in the session. It was also attended by therapists Apoorva and Seema. And, to everybody’s surprise, it turned out that they all knew each other…talk about serendipity!
Everybody went back with their own creations; the artistic Kochhar family with a bag of creations, which included Sukh’s Batman; seven-year-old Niyamat’s doll “Elsa”, inspired by the movie Frozen; besides Seema wearing her rose earrings, in red to match her outfit.
Anita Kohli’s husband Sanjay offered quiet support, even pitching in to show how a pin is used to attach parts to a trinket. Finally, the creations were placed in an oven (strictly, no microwaves to be used, Anita tells us!) and they were ready to go!
As for polymer clay, it’s made of PVC and is a relatively new concept in art and crafts. Currently, the varieties are available are either Chinese or from the US.
Informs Anita, who is self-trained in the art, “The trend is also extremely popular in Russia and the designs they come up with are amazing. Polymer clay is durable, unlike terracotta, and can be stored for years, if not in use. However, it must be kept away from direct sunlight and excessive heat. The clay can be shaped and remoulded till one is satisfied. The articles can be kept for months without baking. Once baked, the articles will become as hard as stone.” It comes in several vibrant colours and new shades can be created by mixing two or more colours.
